Description
Pioneers Pan Phillips and his partner Rich Hobson carved their places in ranching history when they discovered "grass beyond the mountains" in the far reaches of the Chilcotin. Thanks to a series of hugely popular books, their exploits became the stuff of legend and Phillips became one of Canada's enduring folk heroes. But if a man had to be tough to survive some of the roughest living in creation, what did a young girl have to be? This is the story of Pan Phillips' daughter Diana, who learned to trap muskrat when she was little more than a toddler, worked with haying crews before she was into her teens and was renowned as the only person feisty enough to best her legendary father in a slanging match.

I loved the trilogy written by Pan Phillips partner, Rich Hobson, which began with 'Grass Beyond the Mountains.' That book tells the story of the partnership between Diana's father, Pan and Rich Hobson. Pan was the visionary who talked Rich into starting a cattle operation in the hinterlands of British Columbia beginning in the early 1930s. Hobson's second and third books are focused mostly on his story because the partnership split operations between two ranches, and then later dissolved with the partners going separate ways. Hobson's readers are left with only pieces of the Pan Phillips story so it was great anticipation that I ordered Diana's book, and I was not disappointed. She's every bit as good a storyteller in relating the Phillips part of the saga as Hobson was in telling his. It is unbelievable what hardships this group of pioneers endured making a life on the far edges of what we think of as civilization. Diana gives you a perspective from the feminine side too, where the women worked equally as hard as their men and very often harder. My own long years of raising cattle and horses here in the US with modern amenities like electricity and running water make me appreciate her story even more. I hope she writes a sequel / continuation of the saga that tells her story after leaving the Home Ranch.
